The Romani are an ethnic group residing for the most part in Europe, who
trace their origins to the Indian Subcontinent. They are widely known by the
term, "Gypsies". The English term Gypsy (or Gipsy) originates from the
Middle English gypcian, short for Egipcien. It is ultimately derived from the
Greek Αἰγύπτιοι (Aigyptioi), via Middle French and Latin.
Romani are widely dispersed, with their largest concentrated populations in
Europe, especially the Roma of Central and Eastern Europe and Anatolia,
followed by the Kale of Iberia and Southern France.
